CARMEL CA

A minimalistic yet authentically personal beach house reflects the spirit of its Texan owners

Immersed in nature and views, this beach house in Carmel California channels the quiet strength of its owners, who had visited the region on vacation and became enchanted by its rugged beauty and charm. Looking for interior designers in Carmel, California, the owners partnered with Northern California-based Studio Collins Weir. The residence’s unassuming street-level facade opens to expansive walls and walkways of glass and a series of outdoor courtyards.

A hushed canvas of whitewashed floors, bright walls and golden accents in rugs and upholstery regionally sets the stage for the windswept views and sophisticated layering of furnishings and art. In the primary bedroom, taking a cue from the color of the custom concrete CMU bricks that form the core of the house, the leather upholstered headboard and linen bedding add warmth and interest, as do the curves of Pierre Paulin’s Pumpkin chair.

Passionate weekend chefs, the culinary grade, highly customized kitchen interior design has three islands and is finely planned and detailed for the client’s love of cooking and entertaining. Even the smallest details elaborate the personality of the owners such as the Poliform dining chairs with perforated leather edging—similar to a cowboy boot—that give a nod to the couple’s Texas origins.

The outdoor theater and conversation pit gives the impression of a sunken living room, bringing family and friends together. Indoor-outdoor courtyards, interwoven by “bridges of glass,” embrace the true experience of indoor-outdoor living.

Throughout the home, the interior design and architecture are seamlessly integrated, erasing the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Curated by Studio Collins Weir and the client, the art program has rich materiality with works by Raymond Saa, Tara Thacker, Anastasia Faiella and others that bring depth and nuance to the reflective spaces.
