SANCTUARY NAPA CA

This private wellness center offers a place to unwind completely from the cares of the world

A couple with a large family and high-profile professions desired a sanctuary for rejuvenation and self-care, and enlisted the expertise of Studio Collins Weir, with whom they had just collaborated on an adjoining residence. Studio Collins Weir carefully choreographed a 1,000 square-foot guest house interior design that provides spaces for adult relaxation and healing. This welcoming retreat includes a massage room, steam room, outdoor shower, sauna, spa tub, areas for changing and resting as well as a guest suite with a bedroom, private bathroom and kitchenette.

Situated in a picturesque vineyard, the sanctuary is imbued with a strong sense of place channeling the casual refinement of Napa interior design. A five-foot tall-cedar fencing surrounds the structure and ensures the commotion of daily life disappears here. The courtyard includes a water feature, which reduces background noise from the home, a black granite spa tub and a cold plunge pool. A pair of chaise lounges from Janus et Cie offer a place to unwind from the cares of the day.

Private, but interconnected by fully glazed breezeways that are filled with light, the sanctuary is at once austere yet inviting. The interiors engage the senses through a deliberate layering of neutral colors with touches of modern rustic textures. The studio’s custom furniture is found throughout including the two upholstered sofas and the coffee table with an adzed surface that echoes the movement of water in the courtyard. Artwork hints of the spiritual including pieces by James Turrell, Martin Puryear and Gary Hume. Reinforcing the architectural palette, the interiors recede to create the feeling of contemplation and quiet connection with the building and surrounding views.

In the commitment to rejuvenation and health, the retreat also links to a tennis court and cantilevered trellis with a seating area.
